Investment Property for sale in Cape Verde: Maio
We all have our own personal visions of what constitutes the perfect ‘desert island’: an exotic, sun-drenched paradise that, for the duration of your stay, feels like it belongs to you. There is no-one to be seen in any direction, and the only sounds are the rustling of palm fronds in the breeze, waves breaking on the shore, the song of local birdlife and the squeaking of sand beneath your toes. This is pretty much what the Cape Verde island of Maio is like.
Maio belongs to the south (Sotavento) group of islands in the Cape Verde archipelago, and presents exactly what many would describe as their tropical paradise on earth. This fact makes it all the more bewildering, then, that it is so frequently overlooked by visitors to Cape Verde – but, perversely, the lack of hordes of rampaging tourists help to make it the beautiful, unspoiled and peaceful destination it currently remains.
Most of Maio’s coastline is fringed with huge, empty beaches of fine white sand, in turn trimmed with coconut palms and exotic vegetation. On any of the beaches at any time of day, the likelihood is that you would encounter few others - and even then it would most likely to be some of the island’s 6,000 residents going about their daily business. The beaches have been used by sea turtles to lay their eggs for hundreds of years, and the continuation of their species is assured while Maio remains such a precious secret.
Although there are many atmospheric hamlets where the friendly and welcoming local people conduct simple, traditional lives, there are only two towns of note on Maio: the small capital is Vila de Maio, running parallel to one of the longest stretches of beach in the whole island group; Morro, smaller still, has just one street lined with palm trees. Jeeps can be hired in either town for the best way to explore Maio and to access the hard-to-reach beaches that are not linked to roads or tracks. Make sure to also explore the interior of this heavenly destination of just 103 square miles, as there are tranquil oases and some surprising, desert-like terrain to be found, all adding to the inimitable magic of Maio.
This stunning island destination is just a small part of what Cape Verde has to offer.
